Browless and Bothered

After giving birth to my beautiful baby boy, I started losing hair on my eyebrows. I used to have beautiful dark brows, but now they are much thinner. I’m now afraid of washing my face because I fear scrubbing might cause more hair loss. Why is this happening and is there anything non-surgical I can do? Freida, Cheras

Hair loss after childbirth, which is also known as post-partum hair loss, isn’t at all unusual. It is due to hormonal changes namely estrogen and progesterone, which occur during pregnancy that cause a shift in the growth phases of some hair follicles. As a result, several of the hair follicles will enter into the shedding phase at the same time, usually a period after the pregnancy comes to term. Therefore, a number of women may experience a sudden thinning – any part of their hair, months after having their baby. Other factors that may contribute are genetic factors, poor nutrition, reactions to certain medications or hair products. Although, the recovery of this hair loss starts almost 4-6 months later after childbirth, it is important to maintain a rich diet and proper hair care, including using conditioners and shampoos formulated for fine hair. And if this condition persists, it is advisable to seek your dermatologist for further investigations and to start treatments with oral medications or supplements and injectable procedures that help stimulate hair growth and if needed hair transplant.
