The Cost of Cosmetic Surgery Around Asia

Mon, 2012-01-16 11:20 -- csb

Check out the latest prices of cosmetic surgery procedures around the region. Esther Loh reports.

The days when the medical skill, expertise and technology of Western countries were venerated over those of Asia are over. This would certainly be the case when it comes to cosmetic surgery procedures. Asian countries seem to dominate the scene these days, with patients from all over the world flying in to get their desired nips and tucks.

Pricing is a big attraction for those who fly to Asia for surgery. For the same price that you pay in Europe or America, you can often fly into a tropical Asian country, have your surgery done by a top notch doctor, holiday, shop and sightsee for a week or two before your follow up visit, then fly home with your brand new teeth, nose, face, breasts, eyes or whatever!

No wonder this Asian industry is flourishing, with more and more people becoming aware of what’s in and what’s out.
According to Korean plastic surgeon Dr. Lee Myung Ju, patients used to want to have facial cosmetic surgery to look like their favourite actor or actress but that’s no longer the case. “They want to enhance their own natural looks so that their features are in harmony, and there is balance between the eyes, nose and lips,” he says.

In Malaysia and Singapore, everything is available, from simple injectables such as botulinum toxin and fillers, to breast augmentation and tummy tucks. Doctors here are also well trained.

Plastic surgeon Dr. Tan Geok Puan says, “Many of the Malaysian doctors have had part of their training overseas and are well qualified and well trained. Our private hospitals are also modern and well equipped and provide a high standard of care for our patients.”

During their stay, the patients/tourists they bring in are taken care of every step of the way. They are picked up from the airport, brought to their accommodation, transported to the doctor’s clinic for consultation, visited after their procedure is done to see if they need anything and so on.

Malaysians are becoming more conscious of the importance of their physical appearance, thanks to the many fashion and beauty magazines. The advantages of non-invasive and minimally invasive procedures which can make a difference with little or no downtime, has prompted many to take their first step towards looking better.

This growing boom in medical tourism to Asia is partly due to the work of companies such as Makeover Vacations, Gorgeous Getaways, Beautiful Holidays and Surgery Holidays, which bring people from all over the world here to get their procedures done. During their stay, the patients/tourists they bring in are taken care of every step of the way. They are picked up from the airport, brought to their accommodation, transported to the doctor’s clinic for consultation, visited after their procedure is done to see if they need anything and so on.

Patients can recover in peace and, once well enough, even get to enjoy a session or two of shopping. During this time, they are free of duties and tasks such as cooking, washing, cleaning and taking care of their children, leaving them time to relax and recuperate. Language is generally not a problem either in Asia.

Dr. Tan says that there seem to be a lot of happy customers to Malaysia. “You can check out various websites for the numerous testimonials from patients who have had their procedures done in Malaysia,” he says.

However, it is important to note that good quality surgery in the hands of a well-qualified and experienced surgeon may cost a little more.
“I have a patient who had her tummy tuck surgery done by an inexperienced general surgeon. The scar was long and horrible. Revision surgery was needed and it is always much more difficult than performing the initial surgery as you need to treat the scar and deformities carefully,” shares Brazilian plastic surgeon who practices in Singapore, Dr. Marco Faria-Correa. “Patients can also be psychologically affected as the deformities can be traumatic for them.”

So, it makes sense to ensure that the surgeon who will operate on you has had a lot of experience in the procedure you want to have done. Always ask for before and after photos of the doctor’s past patients.

We have great doctors in Asia so make sure the one who operates on you is one of them!

Here we present a list of approximate costs of some cosmetic surgery procedures around Asia. Please note that currency exchange rates do fluctuate but were accurate as at mid May 2011.
